UEFA has announced that Besiktas Vodafone Park Arena in Istanbul will host 2019 Super Cup on Wednesday on 14 August 2019. Super Cup is an annual football event between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europe League. Both teams will join from England for the first time in history, Chelsea, as the winner of UEFA Europe League and Liverpool, the winner of ChampionsLeague. Spain was home of the last five winners and this will be the first Super Cup to be won by an English team since Liverpool in 2015.
Vodafone Park (Besiktas Park)was opened on 11 April 2016. It replaced the old Inonu Stadium which was the home for Besiktas since 1947. It has now 42.000 seats capacity and located very centrally in the city, only 100 metres from Bosphorus, 1 km from Taksim, 2-3 kms from the old town center.
Although Istanbul has previously hosted Uefa Champions League Final in 2005 at Ataturk Olympic Stadium and Uefa Cup Final in 2009 at ŞükrüSaraçoğlu Stadium, this will be the first match in this competition played in Turkey. 2020 Uefa Cup Final will also be held at Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
Referee will be announced closer to the game by UEFA.
The Video Assistant Referee system (VAR) will be used for the first time in this competition.
The 2019 UEFA Super Cup will be played at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul on Wednesday 14 August of that year, the third major UEFA final to be played in the Turkish city.
The match will be the first in this competition played in Turkey, though Istanbul has previously welcomed the UEFA Champions League final (2005, Atatürk Olympic Stadium) and UEFA Cup final (2009, Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium). The home of Beşiktaş opened on 11 April 2016.
The decision was made at a UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Nyon on Wednesday.
Istanbul follows in the footsteps of Prague (2013), Cardiff (2014), Tbilisi (2015), Trondheim (2016), Skopje (2017) and Tallinn (2018) as cities to be awarded the UEFA Super Cup since the fixture switched from its permanent home of Monaco. Tallinn’s Lilleküla Stadium will be the venue for the next edition on Wednesday 15 August 2018.
