Known to the west as Whirling Dervishes, the Mevlevi Order was founded by Mevlana Rumi in the 13th century. The Order was based on tolerance, forgiveness, and enlightenment. They survive today as a cultural brotherhood. These are sacred rituals aim of which is to enrich the experience of worship. The ritual of the Mevlevi sect, known as the Sema, is a serious religious ritual performed by the adherents in a state of trance to honour God.
The ceremony begins with a choir playing an array of musical instruments. Cloaked dervishes make their way to the dance area and start whirling themselves.
